Canvey refinery

For many years I have lived in mid-Essex to the east of London. It's an interesting county that ranges from the charming and rural in the north (see above left) to the industrial in the south (see below left), from the outer commuting suburbs in the west (see above right) to the seaside resorts in the east (see below right)

Badge of Essex

The maritime connexions of the county are revealed in the badge with its three sea-axes (see above). Harwich and Felixstow are on the coast and have been important ports for hundreds of years. The county town is Chelmsford but historically the most important town is Colchester which was a Roman garrison and capital.
